Equinox Over Angkor: A Temple’s Timeless Connection to the Sky

Twice a year, something extraordinary happens at Angkor Wat. As the sun rises on the morning of the equinox, its light falls in perfect alignment with the temple’s central tower, casting a golden glow that seems both intentional and divine.

A DESIGNED ALIGNMENT  

Angkor Wat isn’t just Cambodia’s most famous monument—it’s a masterpiece of astronomical architecture. Built in the 12th century under King Suryavarman II, the temple is thought to reflect the Hindu universe, with Mount Meru—the mythical center of all creation—symbolized by the temple’s central spire. But beyond its religious symbolism, Angkor Wat is also aligned with the cosmos.

On the equinox, when day and night are nearly equal, the sun rises directly in line with the temple’s main axis. From the western entrance, you can see the sun appear to crown the central tower—a sight so precise it’s hard to believe it wasn’t planned.

In 2025, the March equinox will occur on March 20th, but the visual alignment at Angkor Wat is typically observed between March 21st and 23rd, depending on local conditions. As the sun crests the horizon between 5:30 and 6:30 AM, its light will pass straight through the temple’s corridors, illuminating the main tower in a way that feels magical.

This moment is brief, but unforgettable. It draws monks, pilgrims, scientists, and travelers from all over the world, each experiencing it in their own way, whether as a spiritual event, a historical wonder, or simply a breathtaking natural display.
